One of the best Middle Eastern places in the LV

Damascus
2nd and Liberty streets
Allentown

I've been to Damascus almost 10 times now and I've never been anything less than satisfied. Monday's lunch this week was no exception.

First off, Damascus is a non-descript end-of-row spot in the heart of Allentown's Middle Eastern neighborhood. There are about eight utilitarian tables inside. The walls have posters depicting Syrian landmarks, as well as various items from Middle Eastern culture.

Damascus has the best baba ganouj I've had anywhere -- and I try it just about everywhere I can. Creamy and smoky, it's enough for two people to share. Ask for whole wheat pitas for a little extra flavor; the baba can stand up to it. The stuffed grape leaves are also worth trying. You can order them stuffed with lamb, rice and spices, or a vegetarian version. Both are great -- especially with some freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Sandwiches for lunch are tasty and large. I enjoyed a beef shwarma pita sandwich topped with lettuce, onions, tomatoes and tahini sauce. The falafel sandwiches are also delicious. Dinners are equally enjoyable. I've been with my wife twice. I don't recall exactly what we ate. I just know we paid only about $32 and couldn't eat for two days.

Desserts have the Middle Eastern flair you'd expect. I typically opt for the baklava, baked to golden brown perfection, it's flaky crust topped with thin honey sauce. The Turkish-style coffee is good, though nowhere near Olive Branch in Bethlehem.

Two items of note:
- Damascus is BYO. I'd recommend a light ale or lager rather than wine.
- There is no non-smoking section. You could have a table next to some chain-smokers. Ugh. Sometimes, it's the chance you take for good ethnic food.

Consistently delicious and reasonably priced. Can't get much better than that.
