Bring on the bizarre

My recent octopus tentacle salad at The Rock has inspired me on a side mission: to find the most bizarre menu items in the Lehigh Valley. Some of the pre-meal side dishes at the Kim Chee Express might make the list. I'm not looking to be as wildly adventurous as Anthony Bourdain, who during his travels has injested unknown items that the locals claimed would "make him strong," in obvious reference to his sexual potency. Simply put, I'm game for some offbeat, extraordinary ingredients and preparation. Any recommendations?

Hi Michael! Good blog. Have you covered La Placita on 12th St?

Also it's not particularly ethnic but we just tried Cafe 29 in Emmaus and it was delicious -- real good homemade food with great veggies. I wish they would move to the West End!

Thanks, Gale, for the comments. I have covered La Placita: http://lveats.blogspot.com/2005/05/great-authentic-mexican-deli-in.html

But it's been a while since I've been. I need to head back. I think they serve a tripe soup there that may fit the "bizarre" category -- at least for the Lehigh Valley.

Where is Cafe 29?

You've got to try the new Dutch 'n Such that opened on Main St n Naz. It's very expensive (meatloaf cost $16!) but very good. I wouldn't call it Pa. Dutch or German. It's too gourmet, but it's tasty!

I think "Pa. Dutch gourmet" may top the list of my favorite oxymorons! It sounds like comfort food with style -- kind of like "Jones" in Philadelphia. I'll be sure to give it a try. Thanks, Bernie.
