In search of unique pizza

I had the pleasure of visiting Lilly's Pizza in Raleigh, N.C., about two weeks ago. Go to the website and click on "Toppings." They have 77 (!) selections, ranging from porcini mushroom oil to goat cheese to smoked oysters to atomic tofu and baby corn. The place was jammed with families, couples and college students (it's close to NC State).

Where's the imagination of Lehigh Valley pizzerias? On rare occasion, you can find artichoke hearts, cilantro, meatballs and maybe barbecued chicken. How tough would it be to offer a little variety? I guarantee you: a place like Lilly's in the Lehigh Valley would clean up.

Sounds like a good idea, though nuts on a pizza sounds gross!

As far as Mexican goes, I stopped at La Lupita on southside of Bethlehem the other day and had several tacos: roast pork wasn't so good, the chorizo one was better, but the spicy chicken one was fantastic with melted cheese and toppings. For only $2 each they are a good snack/meal. The chips were also good.

I have often thought the same - more pizza topping options! So far I've settled for making my own at home, but it would be nice to see something a little out-of-the-ordinary in the LV. You must have been in heaven!

I don't know how we've missed eachother in the blogosphere - especially since we've both blogged about food since 2005. Oh well, nice to meet you!

It would be nice to have some more topping options. I was at Brew Works recently and they have some inventive pizzas. (Definitely not traditional or Italian) One had pear, blue cheese and prosciutto on it...mmmm.

Anne: no idea how we've missed each other. I, too, make home pizzas on 1/2 focaccia from The Bread Brokers in the Allentown Farmer's Market. (Shout out to Wanda.) I throw on whatever I have in the fridge -- spinach, artichoke hearts, BBQ chicken, smoked pork, red onion, asparagus. (Of course, not all at once.)

Sarina: sounds like a good mix for pizza. I'm a sucker for pear, gorgonzola and walnuts on fresh greens with some homemade balsamic vinaigrette. And if those pears are roasted as on a pizza -- look out!

Though you covered it in a previous post--you did not mention Sette Luna's great pizza's with plenty of gourmet variety. I seem to recall a goat cheese and fig pizza I had there that was incredible.

hallo all,

we had a new pizza place open this friday on 7th - 147 N 7th (corner of 7th and Turner) - Big Daddy's Pizza formerly of Whitehall. They have a specialty section that I can honestly say I've ordered from twice so far. All standard toppings but put together with fresh ingredients. So far I love the Olf Fashioned Grandma - thin crisp sicilian with fresh mozzarella, sweet basil, frsh garlic, plum tomatoes and olive oil...mmm...they deliver and can be reached at 610-740-0740. They have tons of other types including Stuffed pies...I hope I make it through this winter LOL Sarina...i love that pear pizza at the brew works.

You should include it your "Food Links". Readers can request a copy from our site, www.LehighValleyPA.org, or they can just download it and print out the coupons in the back. We have also started a blog, "Lehigh Valley InSite" Check it out! http://lehighvalley.typepad.com/insite/ Maybe you can list that too!

It ain't unique, but The Log Cabin, out in Knowlton Twp NJ on Rt 46, has some of the best NJ pie on the planet. Trust me. If you haven't been there, you are missing some good stuff. Open only Fri, Sat and Sun.

Try Jules Pizza in Doylestown. Thin, 4ft long, 12" wide pizza that they sell whole or slices. Also, unusual toppings like pears, figs and the usual sausage and mushroom, and fresh baby greens salads with an outdoor dining area for summer. Fantastic! There was buzz they might be considering coming to the Lehigh Valley, too.
