New restaurant in downtown Allentown
News today from Allentown is that the owner of the River Grille is going to open a restaurant in the first floor of the Butz Building, 9th and Hamilton. Cuisine will be Portuguese-Mediterranean -- probably similar to his other Easton property, Valencia. (Thanks @matuerk via Twitter.)

For great Portuguese food, you can also try the Eagle Inn in Freemansburg. They have a bar on the ground floor and the restaurant above, and it's easy to miss. But the garlic shrimp is amazing, as is the flaming Portuguese sausage. The mariscada is pricey, but huge and delicious. The service is not exactly speedy, but it's a family restaurant with good food, so I choose not to mind that.
I am very excited that this building is about to finally get a restaurant. As someone who used to work in this building for the last 3 years, I was always sad to see the restaurant space on the first floor empty. And as someone who lives in Easton and has dined at River Grille, Ocean and Valenca, I am excited and encouraged that the owner is investing outside of the city in another downtown that needs his help. I wish him all the best in his new venture.
We truly want to see Valenca succeed. They seem to have everything right, good wine list, beautiful decor EXCEPT FOR THE FOOD. The first time we were there we enjoyed the lunch menu, which prompted us to invite friends to meet there for dinner. DISASTROUS. Mushy Paella, cold soup, Awful Sangria. If the food improved, it would be hard to beat.
