Brazilian concept coming to 9th/Hamilton

From a news release from the City of Allentown. Hope they're able to make it a step up from Rios in Nazareth, which I find acceptable but not as impressive as Brazilian concepts I've been to in Philly and Atlanta.

Brazilian Steakhouse Coming to Allentown

A Brazilian steakhouse called “Made in Brazil” is coming to the Holiday Inn in Center City Allentown. Mayor Ed Pawlowski, hotel manager Cathy Minnich and restaurateurs João Roquetti, Antonio DeMattos and Eduardo Welter made the announcement this morning at the Holiday Inn.

“These three gentlemen reside in Bethlehem, Easton and Nazareth and I couldn’t be more elated that they have chosen Allentown as the place for their business venture,” said Pawlowski. “I can’t wait for them to get started.” The target opening date for the 200 seat restaurant is October 31.

According to Minnich, the restaurant opening is a partnership of the hotel and the restaurateurs. They will share the kitchen, with Made in Brazil operating the room service, lunch, dinner and lounge business and the hotel doing the meeting and banquet business.

“We’re here to stay,” said Welter. “We want to be the best restaurant in the Lehigh Valley. We will serve flavorful, abundant meals while providing friendly and tremendous service.”

According to Roquetti, the restaurant will offer Brazilian-style barbecued meats and service. “Waiters will travel the room carving meat from their skewers and placing it onto guests’ plates. Our guests will not leave hungry.”

The menu will include steaks, chicken, seafood and other top Brazilian dishes. There will be a wide selection of international wines, typical Brazilian drinks and other alcoholic beverages.

The city is assisting this development with a Restaurant Row Incentive Grant of $37,000 and a Citywide Business Opportunity Loan of $40,000. The funds come from the repayment of loans made to previous recipients. The Restaurant Row Incentive Program is administered by the city with the goal of encouraging the development of full service dining restaurants serving lunch and dinner in the downtown business district.

Roquetti says of the 25,000 restaurants in Pennsylvania, only nine are Brazilian, with the majority located in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. “City staff has been very helpful,” said Roquetti. “They introduced us to the owners of the hotel. We quickly realized that this is the place to be. We intend to attract residents and visitors from across the Lehigh Valley to this location.”

The restaurant announcement or grand opening is the third in the city in the last 20 days.

These are the same guys who run Rios in Nazareth. Nice concept but way to salty.

Churascarrias are quite a fun experience. Meat, meat and more meat! This could really expand the nightlife offerings downtown. A few more restaurants and we'll really have something rolling.

Hi,
my name is João Roquetti. I am one of the owners of Made In Brazil. I would like to thank you for reporting the news of our opening so promptly! If possible, I would like to ask you a favor: to change the number of seats at the restaurant to 200, because this is the actual number of people we will be able to accomodate. If you could do that, it would be great!

Again, thank you for reporting it so promptly!!

Thanks for the info, Robin. Sometimes I think you should be writing this blog for me!

If it's the same people who are running Rios, I'd like to make the following suggestions:
1. Nicer and larger salad bar with fresh selections of a variety of veggies. Some of the best blanched asparagus I've had has been at a churascarria.
2. More extensive wine list. Let's face it: red wine and red meat are meant to be together. Let's have some more options at different price levels to complement the meat.
3. Decor. Do something distinctive. Create a special place. Something to match the originality of the food.

Robin's comment about the saltiness of the meat depends on the cut. Some are more seasoned than others. I thought the meat at Rios had balanced seasoning and was prepared well. I hope they bring that same quality to Allentown. I wish them the best. With the new restaurant in the Butz building and the always-dependable Bay Leaf down the street, Allentown is getting some welcome density at 9th/Hamilton.

Hi, Michael.
Your questions might be of general interest, so I will answer them here.
1. We will have over 20 different choices in our salad bar and buffet, focusing on salads and veggies (and asparagus are on the top of our list!);
2. We will have a wide selection of wines in our list. Mostly reds, but also many different whites, since we will have an actual menu besides our barbecue-specialty. The staff will be trained to offer suggestions of pairing for every dish on the menu and for every different taste. We will have wines from all over the world, concentrating on South America, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, but not forgetting France, South Africa and, of course, the United States.
3. As far as decor, the restaurant is all ready! Very colorful and vivid, the dining room is extremely related to the Brazilian Culture.

I hope to see you at the restaurant! I am sure you will enjoy the experience!

Thanks for the upadte, João. I edited the post to reflect 200 -- that's ambitious, but will help create the type of restaurant vibe that's needed in the city. I look forward to visiting Made in Brazil when you open. I'm pleased to see people making a commitment to our downtowns.

People: We need to support entrepreneurs who are investing in our cities, whether they're operating restaurants with 200 or 20 seats. They are important pieces toward our cities' return to prominence.

Thanks for the quick response, Joao. I will certainly visit as soon as I can. I look forward to meeting you. Let me know when you have a website up for your restaurant and I will post it here.

I will definitely let you know when we have our website, Michael. It will be a pleasure to have you posting it here, specially because I can see that you support and understand how important are efforts like ours and the City's to bring Allentown and the Lehigh Valley to the spotlight. Revitalizing Allentown is a process that could be easily brought to success with the support of everyone, and we believe we can help.
If you have any other questions, you can email me at our temporary email address: madeinbrazilrestaurant@gmail.com

Thank you!

I am willing to give this restaurant another try just by virtue of them moving to such a great A-Town location.

I have to recommend you check out Winston's on 7th Street. This is a great West Indian restaurant that knows what it does well and really sticks with it. Chicken and oxtail stewed until it falls off the bone with eye opening Jamaican seasonings and a real family run, mom and pop atmosphere. The best part of any dish are the veggies! Stewed cabbage with carrots and peas along with some roasted sweet plaintains.

If anyone has had the Mofongo at Casa Latina, please let me know how it was. I am planning on going there the next time I have the chance. The problem is I have to pass Winston's to get there and I never seem to make it.

Went to Winston's in February. Outstanding experience chronicled here:

Any word on the bargain Thai place that was supposed to move in on 4th in Bethlehem. It was in a story that included the new Mexican place that went in where the Southampton Fish and Chips was, but I can't find it and have not heard anything. Was really looking forward to cheap Thai food in Bethlehem.

Michael Drabenstott said...

Haven't heard anything. I'll poke around and let you know what I hear.

For the "Rodizio" specialty (All-you-can-eat bbq, buffet, and salad bar) the price is $16.95 for lunch and $23.95 for dinner during the week. On Saturdays and Sundays, the price is $25.95.

The restaurant also offers a-la-carte: Lunch Specials during the week go from $7 to $13; Dinner prices go from $14 to $21.
