My friend Nicole and I decided to check out General Zapata's last night. I agree that the atmosphere is cozy and the food is very good. We both ordered roast pork, she with the Caribbean rice w/ pigeon peas, and I with rice and beans.
The salad had a surprisingly light dressing and authenically Mexican cheese, the plantains were quite good, and the pork was tender and flavorful. I was served Carribean rice w/ pigeon peas by mistake, and I also thought they were very good. But I was quite annoyed when the waitress would not fix it and insisted that it was pretty much the same thing. I'm sure they would not have two separate items on the menu if they were indistinguishable from each other. When spending $12, I would like to be served what I actually ordered. It's fine if mistakes are made, but if I politely ask for them to be fixed, they should be fixed - especially since swapping out a side dish is quite easy. I may go back in the future, but I don't know that I will recommend it to friends.
